Chinese Court of Justice: 1807
It
This is one of the most interesting pictures in the Collection. is slightly damaged but can easily be restored. It has already been 're-lined' as a precaution against possible further damage. There were 2 'replica' of this picture. One belonged to Sir George Staunton, Bart., who was the Interpreter at the trial (and afterwards Chief Superintendent of Trade, etc.); the other belonged to a Mr. Peach, another high officer of the East India Co.,; probably one of the gentle- men shown as seated on the left of the Court. I have a letter (filed with No.88) giving the history of this picture after the death of Mr. Peach in London. This letter can be seen when inspecting the picture).
The picture has been lithographed on stone by M. Gauci and copies of this Lithograph (141" x 20") were published by Messrs. Graf and Sorol (No date known of the Lithograph and copies of it are hard to come by now). Native artist.
